Abstract

We report a 36-year-old woman who developed severe headaches and convulsions after ingesting an ergot alkaloid derivative to suppress breast tenderness for three days. A MRI of the brain showed extensive cortical and subcortical hyperintense lesions in bilateral frontal, parietal and occipital lobes without significant focal stenosis on MRA. With the treatment of steroid and valproic acid, the patient¡¯s symptoms subsided. Follow-up MRI revealed complete resolution of the previously seen multifocal lesions 2 months after symptom onset. This case suggests that ergot alkaloid derivatives may lead to postpartum cerebral angiopathy.
